#15: Miijinimaaganag

No More Stolen Sisters

For the final piece in the collection, I wanted to make something for myself. Something that speaks to the power of this movement, and something that reminds me–despite the violence affecting us–that we are more than statistics or spectacle. We are women, girls, and Two-Spirit people in constant relation to eachother.

I thought of my love of my own sister.

I thought of my mother’s sisters.

I thought of my community of Indigenous sisters, stretched across the world, who have held our connection with love and power.

I settled on a tribute to the Three Sisters, Miijinimaaganag, and an illustration I had seen in a museum coloring book long ago. Corn, beans, and squash. A reminder that we grow in adversity and strength with one another.

(If anyone knows the original artist of this image, please let me know. It has lived in my head since I saw it, and I’ve been unable to find the original illustration.)
