Hashtag Poetics
The visual language of the MMIWG2S movement has long been a rallying cry for me. The red dress, the red handprint, and the various hashtags–#MMIW, #MMIWG2S, and #MMIP–have served to orient me within the movement. They serve as a multilayered poetics, often one that is digitally presented, that easily capture the energy of this specific activism.
This dress–which struck me as coyly professional and feminine–seemed like a good canvas for embellishments from the movement. Rather than focus on lettering or precision, I wanted to interrupt this dress with motifs and statistics potentially out of place on mainstream fashion.
