The Gift of Commitment

Gifting at Firefly

The Firefly Arts community supports gifting as a practice that fosters community cohesion, connection, and exchange. I was excited about creating an opportunity for reciprocal gifting for this project. Introduction to and participation in an Indigenous rights movement is a gift to an ally in-and-of-itself; similarly, committed allyship within this movement is a gift. I wanted to create items that would signify this solidarity. Representative of the 56.1% of Turtle Island Indigenous women who experience sexual violence in their lifetimes, my sister made 56 red-dyed deerhide bracelets. I also designed two separate stickers inspired by the Red Dress imagery and the Firefly event.
